How Do You Become an Electrical Contractor?

There are two main ways that you can become an electrical contractor. The first way is by going to school and receiving a certificate or degree in electrical engineering or electrical contracting (depending on the school that you go to).

During your education, you will learn about the ins and outs of the process and you will be able to become licensed upon completing your program. You will find out how you can use tools and how to ensure that you can do tasks like breaker installation in Chattanooga or replacing circuit breakers. They also help you to understand systems so that you can stay safe while working with electrical items and systems of all types.

Many of these electrical contractor or engineer programs also include an internship in order to complete them. You will get the hands on experience that you need to really understand what is going on and you will be in a place where you feel a lot more confident once you get out and start working on your own. This process is probably the easier of the two, but there is another option available if schooling isn’t your thing.

The other way to become an electrical contractor is that you can get an apprenticeship with a local electrician or contractor. Even though the apprenticeship track takes a bit longer (2 to 4 years, depending on where you are), it will give you a lot more hands-on experience with someone who has been in the business for a long while. You may have to jump through a few more hoops to receive your licensure (including some addition examinations), if you’re not big on going back to school, then working under a master electrician may be the way that you want to go.
